salma-hayek-golden-globes-nars

Salma Hayek carried her beautiful self to the Golden Globes yesterday, and her makeup was done my artist Matthew Vanleeuwen.  I am so glad to see Salma back on the scene, I think she is am amazingly beautiful woman.  Here is the information from Nars on how to recreate her look:

“Salma’s makeup look was directly inspired by her dress,” said NARS Makeup Artist Matthew Vanleeuwen.  “She chose a very neutral colored dress and wanted to make sure her makeup look would pop.  I made her eyes the focus and added a lot of rich, jewel skin tones and fresh color to her cheeks and lips.  Her look was very classic and chic, with some modern textures.”

Matthew Vanleeuwen’s step-by-step to recreate Salma’s makeup look:

Eyes:

  • Apply the China Blue Single Eyeshadow to top and bottom lash line [Matthew’s tip: “I love using navy colors because they make the whites of the eyes pop.”]
  • Next, use the Corfu Cream Eyeshadow as a base, all over eyelid
  • Use the golden champagne side of the Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow on lid
  • Then, use the Bengali Single Eyeshadow all along the lash line, rubbing it into the lash line, deepening the outer corner of the eye, creating shading
  • Curl the eyelashes and apply 2 coats of Black Orchid Mascara on lashes
  • Go back over top lash line with the Night Clubbing Eyeshadow  and use what is left on the brush under the eye to define it [Matthew’s tip:“This shade is perfect to create a smokey eye – it gives a rich sparkle at the lash line with undertones of green and gold.”]

Complexion:

  • Use the Brightening Serum to make skin glow and apply the Makeup Primer
  • Apply the Firming Foundation and set with the Loose Powder

Lips

  • Use the Marnie Lipliner Pencil and Tutti Fruity Lipstick
  • Next, mix the Boogie Nights and Greek Holiday Lipglosses and apply them over the lipstick

Blush

  • Apply the Desire Blush to the apple of cheeks [Matthew’s tip: “I use a powder brush to apply blush.  I find that a bigger brush makes a much softer wash of color.”]
  • Next, use the Laguna Bronzer with short, back and forth stokes from the back of cheekbone forward, to blend

Mood Swing Emotionally Activated Lip Gloss: Similar to (if not exactly like) Smashbox O Gloss- contact with air (not your emotions, sorry) will turn this clear gloss into a shade of pink.  I love the shade that O Gloss turns, wonder if this one is any different?  $18.50

Shu Uemura Spring 2009: Mirage Spring Mode

by Christina Jones on January 5, 2009 · 0 comments

shu-uemura-spring-09Soft and feminine is the theme of the Spring 09 Shu Uemura color cosmetics collection.  Ube romantic shades of pinks, blues and greens and the careful use of shading will get you there.

This collection consists of the pretty standard eye shadows, blushes and lip colors, with the addition of beautiful limited edition drawing pencils to help with your shading.  These pencils come in light blue (shown), pink and lilac, are meant to be used on your eyelids (as opposed to being used as an eye liner), and are $19.

Here are the eye shadows in the collection:

shu-uemura-fantasia-spring-09

This is Fantasia, a trio of cool eye colors.

shu-uemura-utopia-spring-09

This is Utopia, a trio of warm eye colors.

The blushes in the collection are twofold:  One is a cream blush, and the other is a powder.  Layer these for interesting plays on light and color on your cheeks.  These are the blushes in the collection:

shu-uemura-misty-glow-spring-09

This is Misty Glow – these colors are fairly warm, but they do work on my cool skin much better than the next palette.

shu-uemura-orange-phase-spring-09

This is Orange Phase - I love the cream blush here (left), but the orange is definitely for warm skin types.  I wish they had paired these blushes exactly opposite of how they did.  Do give them a try though, they are different and give very interesting effects.

shu-uemura-lip-duo-tint-gloss One more special item of interest in this collection is the limited edition Spring Mode Makeup Lip Duo Tint and Gloss.  This is an all in one product with a rouge color and lip gloss in one package, for $32.  This is really a must-have for me.  The color is cool and yummylicious!

Shu Uemura always comes up with innovative colors and combinations of colors that definitely march to their own beat.  That is one of the reasons that Shu has such a huge following, and the colors really need to be seen and worn to understand just how beautiful they are – it is one of the few lines that you can’t fully appreciate with online visuals.  You can check out the whole collection online, and if you are lucky enough to be near a Shu counter, definitely stop in and let the associates show you the collection, I bet you will fall in love like I always do.  I must get to Houston soon.
